My Mom’s Home Health Care Story
byWhen my Mother fell ill recently, I was suddenly overwhelmed with having to figure out what the next step for her was. In just a few moments my Mom when from being a completely independent woman to needing around the clock care. I considered many different options before deciding that home health care is what would works best for me and my Mom.
The game changed for my family was when my Mom fell and broke her hip. After her hospitalization, she couldn’t go back to living on her own for fear of further accidents. Plus, she needed care during her healing, too.
Before the fall, my Mom was very active in the community. She is an amazing seamstress and knitter, too, so every Christmas she gave away dozens of warm hats, scarves and gloves to the homeless shelter in town. She spent all year working on the warm clothes so she’d have enough for everyone in the shelter once the holidays arrived.
Then, she fell down the front steps of her house and a neighbor had to call the ambulance. I met her at the hospital. She was surprisingly alert but the doctor was very clear about how long healing takes when the patient is over 70 years old. Even though I had been aware of my Mother aging, that was the moment where it really hit home that my strong independent Mother had become an old lady.
She stayed in the hospital for several weeks so the doctors could monitor her healing. I visited her nearly everyday and brought my kids in to see their grandmother, too. All during her hospital stay, my family and friends were coming together to talk about what the next step should be. I am endlessly thankful that I had such supportive people around me during this time of dramatic transition.
We talked about moving my Mom to a nursing home. My Father died in a home a year after major surgery but his time there was beneficial and actually joyful. My family doesn’t have a bad opinion of nursing homes but we didn’t see my Mom fitting into that living situation very well. We decided she needed more independence so she could keep up with as many of her activities as she could.
Then we realized that she would be happiest if she could stay in her own home. It was the place my parents moved into once us kids were all out of the house and married off and she loved it dearly. During her stay in the hospital, we quickly renovated the extra bedroom in her house so a live-in medical support person could move in.
Since we made the home health care decision, my Mom has returned to her sewing. The home health care aide is a wonderful addition at family gatherings and keeps our Mom safe.
